Obesity and Ovarian Cancer

Every year, WFFH selects two areas of primary focus in women’s health. The areas of primary focus each year receive heightened awareness in WFFH programming, including publication of articles in the WFFH scientific journal, patient information brochures, and donation to a researcher in the field at the annual fundraising gala.

2007 Primary Focus:
Ovarian Cancer

September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month provides an opportunity to raise awareness of risk factors, prevention, and treatment of this deadly disease. While ovarian cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related death among women in America, scientists have made significant progress in understanding the factors associated with it.

Women of all ages can develop this cancer, but studies have shown risk increases with age. Other factors associated with ovarian cancer include family history, obesity, use of fertility drugs, and a prior occurrence of certain cancers.

Because the chances of surviving ovarian cancer are higher when it is diagnosed and treated in its early stages, women should talk to their doctors about risk factors and screenings for this disease.

In 2007 the WFFH has chosen ovarian cancer as a primary focus. We will feature a speaker on ovarian cancer at our clinical meeting, will publish a scientific paper in the International Journal of Fertility & Women's Medicine, plan to contribute a portion of funds raised this year to a researcher in the field, and will publish an informational brochure called “Ovarian Cancer Does Have Symptoms.” Brochures will be ready for distribution in September as part of National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.
