Obesity and Ovarian Cancer

Every year, WFFH selects two areas of primary focus in women’s health. The areas of primary focus each year receive heightened awareness in WFFH programming, including publication of articles in the WFFH scientific journal, patient information brochures, and donation to a researcher in the field at the annual fundraising gala.

2007 Primary Focus: Obesity

November is American Diabetes Month

Facts about Obesity

  • Approximately 127 million adults in the U.S. are overweight, 60 million obese, and 9 million severely obese.
  • The prevalence of obesity is higher for women (34 percent) than men (27.7 percent), as is severe obesity: women (6.3 percent) and men (3.1 percent).
  • Obesity increases the risk of illness from about 30 serious medical conditions.
  • Obesity is associated with increases in deaths from all-causes.
  • Individuals with obesity are at higher risk for impaired mobility.
  • Overweight or obese individuals experience social stigmatization and discrimination in employment and academic situations.

Childhood Obesity

Along with the rise in childhood obesity, there has been an increase in the incidence and prevalence of medical conditions in children and adolescents that had been rare in the past. Pediatricians and childhood obesity researchers are reporting more frequent cases of obesity-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes, asthma and hypertension that once were considered adult conditions.

In 2007 the WFFH has chosen obesity as a primary focus. We will feature a speaker on obesity at our clinical meeting, will publish a scientific paper in the International Journal of Fertility & Women's Medicine, plan to contribute a portion of funds raised this year to a researcher in the field, and will publish an informational brochure on nutrition and obesity. Brochures will be ready for distribution in November as part of American Diabetes Month.
